As we get older, it can often seem like there’s less and less to put on our holiday wish lists. As kids with no means of attaining these items for ourselves, it’s easy to ask Mom or Dad for toys and presents galore. But as adults, if we want a new iPod or KitchenAid mixer, odds are that we aren’t going to wait around for Hanukkah or Christmas to ask someone else to buy it for us. So when your friends and relatives ask you what you want this year, or when thinking of gifts for them too, how about purchasing something that truly makes a difference to people in need, like buying a goat for a family in Africa. Now, you may be wondering how is that a gift for you or your loved one? Well, at Oxfam America Unwrapped, whatever gift you choose will be donated in the receiver’s name and will include a personalized picture of that gift for you to put in a card or stuff in a stocking, so they’ll be able to enjoy the warm feeling of having helped a community in need.

At Oxfam America Unwrapped, you can buy charitable gifts for disadvantaged families a half-a-world away. There are dozens of options at all price-levels, so you can tailor your gift-giving experience to anyone’s individual interests and concerns. For example, for $25 you can buy a portable, fuel-efficient cooking stove for a displaced woman or mosquito nets to help protect a family from malaria. You can even help plant anywhere from 50 to 1,000 trees, which not only provides hungry communities with food and shelter, but also helps reduce greenhouse gases in the environment! And, of course, there are many different livestock options, ranging from goats to camels, which will help needy families provide basic necessities for themselves and eventually start their own businesses.

So this year, in the spirit of giving and in honor of today’s Human Rights Day, consider asking for or giving a charitable gift which will help families in need have a happy holiday, as well!

Use This Natural Household Staple as an Eco-Friendly Cleaner

Thursday, December 1st, 2011

HeinzWhiteVinegar 460x460 Use This Natural Household Staple as an Eco Friendly Cleaner

The holiday season is one that nearly everyone looks forward to. There are elaborate dinner parties, presents, visiting family and friends…cleaning. Well, maybe no one really looks forward to holiday cleaning, but it’s there all the same, and if you’re like most families the in the United States, you probably rely on a lot of heavy-duty cleaning solutions to make the job as easy as can be. However, did you know that many household cleaning products contain toxic chemicals that can present potential health hazards? So, how can you avoid exposure to these chemicals this holiday season (and beyond)? Well, for starters, you can substitute your store-bought cleaners for a traditional household staple: white vinegar!

White vinegar is non-toxic, all natural, environmentally-friendly, and very economical! Plus, it has heavy-duty cleaning and disinfecting powers that will guarantee you won’t miss your old cleaners at all. Here are some ways to use white vinegar around your house this holiday season:

Clean Your Coffeemaker… Pour equal parts vinegar and water into the machine’s water chamber, then switch on the brew cycle. Halfway through, turn off the coffeemaker and let the solution sit for about an hour. Turn it on again to complete the cycle, then run several cycles with clean water.

Disinfect Your Dishwasher… To disinfect the interior of the machine, pour ½ cup vinegar into the reservoir and run an empty cycle, says Hunter. Or place a small bowl filled with vinegar on the bottom rack and run an empty cycle.

De-Gunk Your Drains… Clean drains―and the pipes they’re attached to―by pouring vinegar down them. After 30 minutes, flush with cold water.

For Shining Floors… Add ¼ cup vinegar to a bucket of warm water to clean almost any type of floor except marble (vinegar can scratch it) or wood (vinegar can strip it).

For Glistening Glassware… For spotless hand-washed glasses, add 1 cup vinegar to the rinse water.

Clean Moldy Walls… Spray vinegar on the affected areas. After about 15 minutes, rinse and let dry thoroughly.

Streamline Showerheads… To combat mineral deposits, pour vinegar into a plastic grocery bag and knot the handles over the neck of the showerhead, securing with rubber bands. Let soak overnight. Rinse with water in the morning.

Windows Will Sparkle… Mix ¼ cup vinegar, 2 cups water, and a squirt of liquid Castile soap in a spray bottle. Spritz windows and wipe with a sheet of newspaper.

Photo from DesignSponge.com

During this time of year, it can be tempting to buy new holiday décor for every occasion. You know the kind we’re talking about: white porcelain deer for the coffee tables, sparkly new napkin-rings for the dining room, and beautiful glass candlesticks for the mantel. And while there’s definitely a time and a place for giving into those holiday-décor desires, why not also incorporate some sustainable elements into your entertaining?

This Thanksgiving, make use of a free, natural, and bountiful resource…fallen leaves! Autumn leaves offer the savvy entertainer the opportunity to bring beautiful fall colors into any centerpiece or tablescape. Use these fiery beauties by themselves in a vase, grouped with berries for a festive bouquet, or as filler for a bowl of fruit. And if straight up leaves doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, you can always disguise them as something else—like roses!

This simple tutorial from Design*Sponge will show you just how easy it is to transform a handful of backyard rubbish into a bouquet of beautiful, crimson and gold flowers. So not only will you have a great, handcrafted centerpiece to delight your guests, but you’ll also have the satisfaction of knowing that you did your part to reduce waste this holiday seasons!

Don’t Feel Like Being an Eco-Friendly Chef? Dine Out at a Sustainable Restaurant!

Thursday, August 25th, 2011
Portage Bay Cafe 460x306 Don’t Feel Like Being an Eco Friendly Chef? Dine Out at a Sustainable Restaurant!

Dine out at a sustainable restaurant such as Portage Bay Cafe in Seattle, WA.

When you don’t feel like cooking, help is usually just around the corner.

Right around your street corner, to be exact. Going out to eat is a sacred tradition for many folks; whether it’s for fun, that first date, or celebrating something special. But for adventurous diners who also value sustainability, finding a restaurant that’s eco-friendly as well as delicious could make or break a night out.

Sustainable restaurants strive to provide high quality meals while practicing sustainable business procedures such as reducing food, energy, and materials waste.

Some restaurants simply use energy efficient light bulbs, cleaning supplies, and heating systems just like any other green business or household. But because a restaurant’s identity starts with food, what exactly does a sustainable restaurant look like?

At Poste Moderne Brasserie in Washington D.C., executive chef Robert Weland cooks with recycled cooking oils, makes food from an on-site organic garden, and installed an on-site water purification system. Weland clearly sees a relationship between sustainability and independence.

Portage Bay Café is a restaurant and catering company with three locations in Seattle. Portage Bay Café practices sustainability by purchasing food from local farms including Full Circle, Oxbow, Fonte Coffee Roaster, Bluebird Farms, and Painted Hills Natural Beef. If growing your own fruits and vegetables on-site isn’t an option, buying local is the next best thing!

Also consider how your food is cooked and served. Vinegars, sausages, wines, and dressings created in-house can complement recycled cooking oils. And once everything is cooked, “to go” orders can be taken home with bio-degradable corn-based utensils, straws, and containers.

And of course, there are plenty of restaurants that are vegan or vegetarian. Since the lifetime costs of raising animals for food can be reduced by not eating animals at all, choosing what NOT to serve can be just as important as how you serve it.

So if you don’t feel like being a sustainable cook tonight, choose instead to be a sustainable diner!

Homemade Compost is a Way to Turn Your Yard and Kitchen Waste into Gardening Gold

Thursday, August 18th, 2011
bettercompostfl 460x344 Homemade Compost is a Way to Turn Your Yard and Kitchen Waste into Gardening Gold

Photo from compostinstructions.com

How do you make your garden grow?

The obvious answer is to buy fertilizer, but did you know that yard trimmings, leaves, and organic debris can be converted into nutritious plant food? So instead of trashing these organic wastes into overcrowded landfills, make your own homemade compost to turn this “garbage” into gardening gold!

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, yard waste and food residuals take up 23 percent of all U.S. waste. Making your own compost can be your way to contribute to environmental sustainability.

The process of making your own compost is complex, but here are the basic steps. This in-depth recipe for homemade compost will give you more specifics.

1. Find an area in your backyard to store this compost.

Most compost piles are three to four feet in diameter and four to five feet high. You can purchase your own compost bin or you can make your own out of chicken wire (or fencing) and wood.

2. Gather your ingredients.

Almost anything organic can be composted. Grass clippings, shrubbery, plant debris, leaves, cat and dog fur, house dust, and fruits and vegetables are all fair game. Just avoid meats, animal fats, pine needles, and wood scraps because they decompose too slowly.

3. Mix your ingredients together.

As a general rule, use the ratio of three parts carbonaceous materials (harder materials such as leaves, wood, and dried grass) and one part nitrogenous materials (softer materials such as food wastes). Mix these items together with water, oxygen, and compost organisms to get the process going.

4. Let it all cook in the sun.

Leave your compost materials outdoors to let the hot sun stimulate the composting process. Like any good chef, “stir” your compost every so often with a shovel to make sure the mixture stays mixed. If needed, add more composting organisms if things aren’t happening quickly enough.

These are the basic steps. Resources such as the Environmental Protection Agency and Composting 101 can give you a better understanding of the nuances of conjuring up your gardening treasure.

Keep Yourself and the Earth Clean With Natural Soaps

When we think about materials that can harm our planet, we often think about dangerous chemicals, carbon dioxide emissions, and garbage waste. What we don’t think about is soap.

Soap? You mean the stuff we use to clean our clothes, homes, and bodies?

Believe it or not, most of the store-bought soap we use on a daily basis can negatively impact the Earth in ways we never thought about. It just never occurs to us because we always associate “soap” with “clean,” because that’s what soap is used for!

Even antibacterial soaps you can find at any grocery store can cause damage. Antibacterial soaps may kill harmful bacteria, but they contain chemicals such as methylisothiazolinone, triclosan, and tricloban which have been known to kill animal and sea life. This goes to show that whatever goes down the drain has to come out somewhere.

Thankfully, there is a safer alternative: natural soaps. Natural soaps are made from natural ingredients derived from plants and essential oils. Soaps free from phosphates, ammonia, and chlorine (among other chemicals) leave behind a smaller environmental impact.

Unfortunately, it is very difficult to make soap that is 100 percent safe for the environment. That is why Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day, a manufacturer of natural eco-friendly cleaning supplies, are also committed to making soaps that are biodegradable, not tested on animals, follows Good Manufacturing Practices, and are shipped in bottles that are recyclable and made from 25 percent post consumer plastic.

So if you want to stay clean while keeping our planet clean, consider the advantages of purchasing natural soaps. Check out Olive & Myrtle’s inventory of cleaning products made from Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day.
