seattle skyline Main New Seattle Eco Friendly Product Retailer!

Olive & Myrtle is happy to announce our recent move to the Pacific Northwest! It was a big decision, but one that we know will be perfect for us. We look forward to getting to know sustainable designers, artists and companies in Seattle. Our new office is located in Belltown, and came with fabulous views of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains! Olive & Myrtle can still be found 24/7 online, across the country, but we will be looking for just the perfect spot to open our first store in one of Seattle’s fabulous neighborhoods in 2012. We look forward to being the #1 Seattle retailer for beautifully-designed eco-friendly products for the home.

Are Your Cotton Products Truly Natural?

Wednesday, January 19th, 2011

LPO TurkishTowels White 72dpi 460x460 Are Your Cotton Products Truly Natural?

(Pictured above: Genuinely natural Turkish Cotton Towels by LOOP Organic)

Companies that produce cotton products are quick to correlate their items with ‘natural,’ but just because they’re made with a non-synthetic fiber, your cotton towels, blankets, and linens could be carrying heavy toxins. Average cotton production uses some of the most chemical pesticides by volume of any crop, and average textile production can include harmful, cancer-causing chemicals (arsenic, formaldehyde, heavy-metal dyes), according to actual natural cotton company LOOP Organic.

LOOP Organic’s mission is to educate the public on the realities of conventional cotton growing and processing and to create high-quality linens that are 100% organic and chemical-free, and produced sweatshop-free.  Certified by the toughest of standards for organic textiles, LOOP Organic products are genuinely natural, soft, and traded and made responsibly, with respect for the environment and fair trade guidelines.

Next time you cozy up beneath your sheets, or wrap your clean body in a towel after a shower, keep in mind you just may be cozying up to chemicals and toxins. Check out Olive and Myrtle’s collection of LOOP products, and cozy up / wrap up confidently in healthy, pure cotton.

Sturdy & Chic: Reclaimed Maple Cutting Boards

wood from hood cutting boards 72dpi 2 460x461 Sturdy & Chic: Reclaimed Maple Cutting Boards Wood From the Hood makes these solid cutting boards from reclaimed Maple trees in Minnesota. The trees used to create the lumber have all fallen naturally, and then Wood From the Hood dedicates itself to processing and creating all products within a 150-mile radius of where the tree was reclaimed, creating a minimal carbon footprint.

Given a deep finish with wood conditioner, these boards require little effort to care for, and are sturdy enough to provide a lifetime of use. These green cutting boards are functional, sustainable, and beautiful, and come in three convenient sizes.

Product of the Week: The Plastic Bag Bag

Friday, January 7th, 2011

BAG HandmadePlasticBag Blue 88006 72dpi 459x459 Product of the Week: The Plastic Bag Bag

We’re all guilty of harboring a collection of those plastic bags. You know the ones–not the big, thick ones you actually reuse again, but the thin, more commonly-given bags. You probably own one or several canvas or cotton reusable totes, but once in a while you forget them in your car, or at home, or have too much stuff, and inevitably, those plastic bags creep back into your life.

Enter Sally Murphy. A cancer survivor, Murphy knit throughout her battle, and was inspired to incorporate a new medium. The Plastic Bag Bag was created, and is a gorgeous use of all that plastic. Durable, stylish, and super handy, each bag has a reinforced bottom and handles, and puts good use to 20 post-consumer plastic bags. As a beach bag, grocery bag, or purse, this multi-purpose tote is a beautiful representation of useful repurposing, and is Murphy’s nod of respect to the planet for receiving a second chance at life.
